The morning I found my ex's old coffee mug in the back of the cabinet at my mom's house

I was helping my mom clean out her pantry last Saturday and when I opened the cabinet above the stove there it was, that chipped blue mug she used to drink from every morning, and I finally just threw it in the trash instead of holding onto it for another 3 years of 'maybe I'll give it back someday' like I've been doing since the divorce was finalized.

Told my buddy Mike he finally tossed his ex's hoodie last week and said it felt like lifting a weight.

Started tossing stuff from my last breakup piece by piece, and it really did feel like getting rid of a burden. Took me a few months to finally throw out the last shirt, but once it was gone I could actually breathe easier. Did you find it helped your buddy move on faster once that hoodie was gone?

The thing people miss is that the mug itself probably wasn't the real issue. It was the empty space in the cabinet and the little mental loop you had to do every time you opened that door. Like your brain was still holding a spot for her in your daily life, even when you weren't thinking about her directly. Getting rid of it is basically telling your subconscious "the lease is up on that corner of my mind." Did you notice any other small things you were subconsciously holding onto that you didn't even realize were still around?
