Took 18 months to actually split the bank accounts after the divorce was final
I thought getting divorced was the hard part. But then we had this joint account from like 15 years of marriage and neither of us wanted to deal with closing it. Every month we would both just keep putting money in for the mortgage that was still in both names. I kept saying I will fix it next week for over a year. Finally last month my ex texted me saying the bank charged us a $35 fee for low balance and I just lost it. I drove straight to the Wells Fargo in downtown Portland and sat there for 2 hours while they sorted it out. The teller had to call a manager because we had all these automatic payments tied to it. Has anyone else had a joint account just haunt them way longer than the actual marriage? I feel like an idiot for letting it drag out that long.

The real problem wasn't the account itself, it was that neither of you had enough of a reason to deal with it until the $35 fee finally pissed you off enough. Most people forget that banks have these hidden fees specifically designed to catch people who drag their feet on closing accounts. But honestly, the fee did you a favor because now you never have to look at that account again.

Wait, do we actually think banks charge these fees on purpose to catch lazy people, or is it just a side effect of a broken system that nobody cares to fix? My old bank hit me with a $12 monthly fee for a savings account I opened in college and forgot about for six years. That $144 I lost stung way worse than your $35, and I only found out when I went to buy a car and the loan guy asked about a random account with a negative balance. Like you said, it forced me to finally call and close it, and honestly the whole thing made me never want to use that bank again for anything, so maybe the fee was worth it for the lesson?
