Warning: I almost lost it at the grocery store when I saw my ex's favorite cereal
I was at the Safeway on Main Street last Thursday, just trying to get milk. I turned the corner and there was a whole display of that sugary cereal he always ate. My chest got tight and I just stood there frozen for a minute. I took a deep breath, walked to a different aisle, and called my sister. She talked me down while I finished my shopping. Has anyone else had a simple thing like that throw you off so hard?

Man, I get it but that stuff never hits me that way. My ex loved these terrible gas station burritos, the kind that look like they've been under a heat lamp since 2010. I see them now and just laugh. It's a reminder of how bad her taste was, not a sad memory. For me, those little things became proof I'm better off. They lost their power pretty quick.

Honestly, how long did that take? I used to feel the same way, that you just get over things and they stop hurting. Then I walked past this specific brand of gum in a store (the kind my ex always chewed, the really strong mint stuff). It hit me like a brick years later, totally out of the blue. It wasn't about missing them at all, it was just this weird, sharp memory of a feeling. Some stuff just gets wired into your brain differently, I guess. It's not always about being sad, sometimes it's just the brain being a jerk and showing you a random old movie clip.

Yeah, that random movie clip feeling is so real. It's like your brain just hits play on some old tape you forgot about.
