Drywall anchors in my 1970s apartment betrayed me at 2am

A shelf with 40 lbs of books crashed down Tuesday night because the old toggle bolts were rusted through, so now I'm learning how to find studs with a $15 magnetic scanner instead, has anyone else inherited hidden fastener problems from old builds?

My buddy's bathroom mirror fell off last month... same old apartment issue.

My buddy's mirror fell off twice before he gave up and just taped it back on. Looks like a crime scene with all that duct tape, but hey, it's held up for six months now, so maybe that's the secret.
