Had a contractor tell me something about caulk that stuck with me for years

I was helping my neighbor Tim redo his bathroom in Portland and he spent like 10 minutes just smoothing the caulk line with his finger. I asked why he was so slow and he said "if you rush the caulk you'll be redoing it in 6 months, the prep is everything." He showed me how wiping it too fast leaves gaps that let moisture in. Has anyone else had a simple tip from someone that totally changed how you do something basic?

That line about rushing the caulk really hits home for me. My uncle taught me a similar lesson when we were sealing the gaps around my old windows. He said "caulk is cheap, your time isn't, so take the time to do it right the first time." I used to just slap it on and move on, but then I'd have cracks and peeling within a year. Now I always tape off the edges, push the caulk deep into the gap, and wet my finger with soapy water before smoothing it out. The finish is way cleaner and it actually lasts. Did your neighbor give you any other bathroom tips that stuck with you?

My neighbor gave me the same soapy water trick and it changed everything. Before that I used to just wipe with a dry finger and it always pulled and left these little ridges. Now I keep a little bowl of soapy water right next to me when I'm caulking. Another thing that stuck with me from a different guy was to cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45 degree angle instead of straight across. It lets you control the bead way better and you don't end up with a mess. That prep work is the difference between something that looks good for years versus something that looks like garbage in a few months. I've learned the hard way that taking an extra 10 minutes on the front end saves you hours of scraping and redoing later.
