I finally got called out by a plumber for my crappy soldering
So last month I was trying to sweat copper pipes in my basement for a new laundry sink. This old plumber came over to help me fix a leak I made and he just looked at my joints and said 'did you even clean these with emery cloth?' Turns out I skipped that step for like 10 fittings and they all looked like garbage. He showed me how to heat the fitting right instead of the pipe and it was like night and day. Anyone else have a tradesperson call them out on something basic they were doing wrong?

Honestly I bought a cheap wire stripper from Harbor Freight and spent three hours wondering why my electrical work kept shorting out. An electrician buddy took one look and said hey man that tool is stripping the insulation off but nicking the copper every time. I threw it in the trash and got a decent Klein one and suddenly my outlets actually worked.

Did you check if it was actually cutting the wire instead of just stripping it? That's usually the first sign you bought a dud.
