I finally swapped my cheap drill bits for a mid-tier set after a disaster in Tacoma
Spent $20 on a random pack of bits and snapped three of them trying to put together a simple pergola frame last weekend. Picked up a Milwaukee Shockwave set for $60 and it cut through pressure-treated lumber like butter. Anyone else have a moment where cheap tools cost you more time and money in the long run?

Man, I feel your pain. That moment when you're wrenching on something and the bit just gives up is the worst. I've been there too, trying to save a few bucks and ending up with a pile of broken metal and a half-finished project. It's a hard lesson, but spending a bit more upfront really does save you the headache and the extra trip to the store. Good on you for making the swap, it's the kind of thing that makes you wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Did you swap out the whole bit set or just the one that stripped on you? I'm curious because I've got a couple of old ratchet sockets that are starting to round off and I'm torn between replacing just those and shelling out for a whole new set. Also, what brand did you go with after the cheap one let you down? I'm trying to avoid the same mistake with a new impact driver I just bought.

You know @amyh12, I actually ended up swapping out the whole bit set. It hurt a little to drop the cash, but I figured if one bit stripped that fast, the others were probably on borrowed time too. I went with DeWalt after that cheap set let me down, and they've held up way better so far. I feel you on being torn between replacing just a couple or going all in, but with sockets rounding off, you might be better off getting a new set before they start slipping on you mid-job. That impact driver deserves something reliable anyway.
