My neighbor swore by self-leveling compound on a crooked subfloor - what a mess

He said just pour it thick and it'll fix any slope. I did that in my laundry room and ended up with a 2 inch high spot by the door that cracked the tiles. Has anyone actually leveled a floor without screeding first?

33 gallons in a 10x12 room. I actually watched a guy on YouTube do the same thing with his garage and he ended up with a puddle that turned into a 4 inch ledge at the door. My buddy Tom tried the leveling compound in his sunroom without any primer first and it cracked like a dried lake bed in July. Honestly the stuff is more like thick gravy than a real fix for bad framing. I just ripped up that whole laundry floor last month and went back to plywood patches and a long level.

Self-leveling compound ain't self-leveling if you don't level it first.
