That time a drywall finisher told me I was wiping the mud too much

Guy walks over while I'm smoothing a joint for the fifth time and says 'ya keep wiping off the mud, not spreading it.' Turns out I was taking material off instead of leaving a thin coat. Has anyone else had a pro call them out on something they thought they were doing right?

I used to think people were overhyping how much a good setup matters. But yeah, @wright.leo is right - once I stopped fighting my tools and actually listened to the advice, it made a huge difference. I was one of those people who thought you could brute force your way through anything with enough sandpaper and elbow grease. Turns out that's just a recipe for frustration and uneven finishes. Now I take the time to get everything dialed in right and the results speak for themselves.

Oh man, that reminds me of when I was trying to fix a hole in my living room wall and kept sanding the spackle down to nothing. My neighbor came over, saw me going at it for the tenth time, and was like "dude you're making a crater." He showed me to just put a thicker amount on and leave it alone. I was so focused on getting it perfectly flat that I was basically removing all the stuff that was supposed to fill the hole in the first place. Felt real dumb but at least the wall looks okay now.
