Had to eat crow about drywall mud - the premixed stuff really is fine

For years I was that guy mixing my own joint compound from powder. Thought premixed was for lazy people who didn't care about quality. Then I did a quick patch job on a rental in Columbus last month and grabbed a bucket of premixed from Lowe's out of pure laziness. It saved me 20 minutes and the finish was actually smoother. Has anyone else found a shortcut that worked better than the old-school way?

Ha, @felixhenderson you're making me rethink my whole approach to sandpaper now! Did the cheap stuff actually hold up over multiple projects or was it just good for that one quick job?

@felixhenderson this is exactly the kind of thing that makes you wonder how much we're paying for marketing hype vs actual quality. It's like overpriced name brand ibuprofen that's literally the same stuff, @sammartinez had it right questioning how it holds up over time.

Walked into that same trap myself with sandpaper. Always used the expensive 3M stuff from the hardware store for years. Grabbed a pack of the cheap no-name sandpaper at a dollar store for a quick job on some baseboards and figured I'd hate it. That cheap stuff actually cut just as good and didn't clog up near as fast. Still buy the cheap brand now.
