Last night, I attempted to hang a picture and now there's a hole big enough for a cat to crawl through!

Hold on, is it really that bad? It's just a hole from a cat, not a doorway. A simple patch kit from the hardware store has fixed way worse for me. Thomas is making it sound like we're rebuilding a whole wall. If the drywall around it is still solid, just patch it up and move on.

For a cat-sized hole, spackle and a patch will do the trick!

Spackle and a patch could fail fast for a cat-sized hole. Drywall needs a solid backing or the patch might just fall out. Remember what hannah_west39 said about a picture doing damage? A cat pushing on a weak spot could make things way worse. You might need to cut out the bad part and put in a new piece of drywall. Then use joint compound and mesh tape for a strong fix. Otherwise, that hole will be back in no time.
