Question about using old garage door springs for other projects
I was talking to my neighbor who used to work at a hardware store, and he told me those old torsion springs can snap with crazy force even after they're off the door. Said he saw a guy lose two fingers trying to repurpose one for a gate project. I was about to use one as a counterweight for my shed door but now I'm second guessing it. Has anyone here actually reused one safely or is that just asking for trouble?

I clamped the spring tight in a vice before taking off the tension and it held fine for my chicken coop door.

and my buddy jim literally just went through this exact thing last month. he had this old spring from a 16 footer he was gonna use on a small farm gate, figured he'd be careful and everything. thing let go while he was adjusting the tension bracket and put a dent in his garage wall you could fit a basketball through.
