Spent 6 hours trying to hang a single shelf because my stud finder kept beeping at nothing

Turns out my cheap stud finder was just detecting the metal pipe behind the drywall, so after I finally borrowed my neighbor's $80 scanner I had it up in 10 minutes - has anyone else wasted a whole day on a job that should've taken 20 minutes?

@elliot_roberts nah man, a GOOD stud finder is rock solid, cheap ones are the problem.

Wait, have you actually caught yours giving bad readings before? I used to think stud finders were pretty reliable until one told me there was a stud right where I ended up drilling into empty drywall. Ngl that changed my whole view on them, they really do just guess sometimes.
