Took a gamble on laminate versus LVP in my basement and I'm second guessing now
I spent three weeks going back and forth between laminate and luxury vinyl plank for my basement remodel in Denver. Everyone online says LVP is the way to go for basements because of moisture... but I ended up going with laminate because it felt more solid underfoot and looked way more like real wood. Got it all installed last weekend and now I'm paranoid every time I walk down there. The subfloor is concrete and I put down a vapor barrier but I still worry one little leak from the water heater is gonna wreck everything. My buddy who did LVP in his basement said I made a mistake and should've spent the extra $400. Has anyone run laminate in a basement for more than a year and regretted it?

Honestly, same here, I was team laminate until I saw my buddy's LVP hold up in a flood.

violag80's comment about seeing LVP hold up in a flood really hits home. It's kind of like that whole debate about tile versus hardwood in kitchens you know? We always think we're making the smart choice based on looks and feel, but then actual real life throws a wet mop at us. I think about how people buy a nice wool rug for a dining room and then panic every time someone drops a glass of red wine. We all do it, we pick the thing that feels nicer to the touch and looks better in the picture and then we spend the next year worrying about it. Honestly, if you have a good vapor barrier and your water heater is in good shape you're probably fine. Paranoia is just part of the deal when you go with the pretty option over the practical one.

Totally agree with you on the wool rug thing. I bought this beautiful shag rug for my living room and now I'm scared to even walk on it with shoes on. My wife drops her coffee at least once a week and I'm over here with a towel and a prayer. You're right about the vapor barrier too, that's the real MVP. We stress about the surface but the real protection is underneath.
