Saw my buddy get pulled over last night and it hit me different

I was riding shotgun with my friend Mark in Austin when a cop lit us up for going 5 over. He gave Mark a warning and let him go, but then I remembered when I got a $180 ticket for the exact same thing two months ago on the same street. Why does one driver get a pass while another gets the book thrown at them for the same minor speeding?

Getting let off feels totally random depending on the cop's mood that day.

You said 'totally random depending on the cop's mood that day'... man that hits. Last week I got pulled for rolling a stop sign and the cop just told me to slow down and let me go. Two days later my buddy got a ticket for the exact same thing, same intersection. It's like they flip a coin sometimes... makes you wonder what they're even looking for when they pull you over.

Why does everyone assume it's random though? I've gotten out of tickets plenty of times but it's always been because I was respectful and didn't make excuses. Maybe your buddy was a jerk about it or had a worse record. Cops have body cams now and have to write reports explaining why they gave a warning versus a ticket. If they let everyone off it looks bad on them when their stats get reviewed. Might not be a coin flip, might be you just don't see the whole picture.
