The HOA president who fined me $150 but let his buddy slide on the same rule
Last month in Phoenix, my neighbor's trash cans were out 2 days past pickup and I got a $150 fine. But the HOA president's brother-in-law had his cans out for a whole week and nothing happened. I literally took photos of both and sent them to the board, and they said the other case was 'under review' for 3 weeks. Has anyone else gotten burned by selective enforcement like this, or is my HOA just extra shady?

My buddy Rick over in Mesa had the same thing happen with his HOA, they hit him with a $200 fine for a fence gap that was like 3 inches, but the board members next door had a whole rotted out section for months. He took photos too and they kept saying it was a "different violation type" even though it was the exact same rule in their handbook. After five weeks of back and forth, he finally got the fine dropped only because he showed up to a board meeting with printouts and a folder full of their own past emails. They can't stand being embarrassed in public, that's the only language they understand with these people.

Ha! That sounds exactly right. We had the same garbage with our HOA over a mailbox that was slightly crooked while the president's own fence was falling apart for a year. Public shaming at a meeting is the only thing that works with those folks.
