A field engineer in Ohio made me redo my whole layer setup

We had a project in Cincinnati last month where the site had old as-built drawings that didn't match anything. I was fighting with the survey data and the CAD model all day. Then this field engineer, maybe 60, walked over and said "you're drawing what you think is there, not what's actually there." He showed me his field notes, wrote down the real offsets on a napkin. I redid my layers and reference points based on that. Took about 3 hours but everything clicked after. Has anyone else had a senior guy just casually fix your whole workflow with one sentence?

Maybe it's just me, but that napkin trick sounds like a crutch. You spent three hours redoing everything because one guy told you his version of reality. Field notes get outdated too, and old timers are just as capable of being wrong as the as-builts you were fighting. The real issue is you had no way to verify your own work, so you rolled over the second he sounded confident. If that survey data was off, his pencil sketches are guesswork with a story attached. I'd rather trust my own CAD model and check it twice than rebuild my whole setup on a senior's unsolicited opinion. Sometimes the old-school fix is just another layer of confusion wearing a friendly face.

Take a breath, @david_reed22, it’s just a napkin trick, not a personal attack on your CAD skills. People swap shortcuts all the time, and sometimes they help, sometimes they don’t, no need to turn it into a war.
