Had a senior drafter in Austin show me his layer naming system...

I was working on a big commercial project in Austin last year and one of the old guys walked me through how he names his layers. He uses a 3 digit prefix for the sheet type and then the layer function like A-201-WALL. It took me about 2 weeks to get used to it but now I never lose track of elements in a crowded drawing. Has anyone else picked up a weird system like that from an older drafter?

A buddy of mine in Houston learned a system from an old timer where they used color codes mixed with letters. Blue for existing stuff, red for demolition, and yellow for new work. He said it made cross referencing a nightmare until he memorized it all.

You ever try just using one core color and adding a simple letter tag? I had a buddy who switched from a whole rainbow system to just yellow for everything with a "D" or "N" scribbled next to it, and it cut his confusion in half.
