Had to choose between a $500 drafting table upgrade or a new monitor arm setup for my home office.

Isn't a drafting table already a kind of arm setup?

Hold on, what if alicemartinez is actually onto something? A drafting table is just a big arm holding up a flat surface. It swings and tilts. That's the same basic job. The lamp arm is a smaller helper arm attached to the main one. So calling the whole thing an arm setup makes sense. It's all just arms holding tools for your hands. The big arm just holds the biggest tool, the board.

Actually a drafting table is the whole surface, @alicemartinez. The arm is just the part that holds the lamp or magnifier. So it's a piece of the setup, not the other way around.

Okay but "the big arm just holds the biggest tool" is kind of blowing my mind, I never thought of it like that. I mean, I went with the monitor arm setup last year and it was the right call for me. My old drafting table is fine, I just prop a board on it, but having my screens exactly where I need them cleared up so much desk space. Idk, maybe it's just me but the arm feels like it does more heavy lifting day to day.
