Overheard a foreman say he still pencils everything in first

Guy next to me at lunch said he drafts everything by hand before touching CAD. Told me it catches 90% of his layout mistakes before they hit the screen. Has anyone else gone back to paper for rough drafts?

Oh come on, you guys are seriously romanticizing the pencil? I mean, I get the nostalgia factor but @torres.blair is closer to the truth here - it's like insisting on using a typewriter because your fingers "think better" on the keys. Hand drafting before CAD is a time-waster in a world where you can just undo, zoom in, and check your grid in two seconds. Pencil layouts catch mistakes? A good CAD template with snapping and layers catches them before they even happen, and you don't have to erase smudges off your desk afterward. Maybe it works for old-school habits, but I'd rather spend that extra ten minutes actually finishing the job than playing artist with a number two.

There's something to that old-school habit. Kind of like how people who hand-write grocery lists actually waste less food - it forces your brain to slow down and think before you do the thing.
