Pro tip: Stop using decimal feet for pipe offsets, switch to inches

I was working on a sprinkler system layout in Modesto last Tuesday and kept running into weird fit issues at the joints. For like three years I'd been doing all my offset calculations in decimal feet because that's how my first boss showed me. Then an older drafter named Rick walked over and asked why my measurements looked off. He pointed at my 0.75 foot drop and said that's 9 inches not 8.5 like I had in my head. I felt like an idiot because I'd been rounding everything and getting close but never perfect. Switched to inches and fractions right then and everything started clicking into place way cleaner. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized a simple change in units saved you a ton of headache?

That Rick guy saved you a ton of frustration right there. Once you go to inches and fractions the guesswork just VANISHES and your joints line up every time.

Buddy of mine swore by metric for years. Finally switched to inches after watching his dovetails look like a toddler drew them. He texted me last night, said @hugotaylor was right on the money.

Oh man, yeah. Inches just click better for woodworking once you get the hang of fractions. The math is way simpler when you're cutting by hand or on a table saw.
