Saw what happens to a drawing set after 3 months with no markup standards
I started a new job back in February and walked into a real mess. The guy before me just left layers on default colors, no plot styles set up, text all over the place. Three months in and we got a revision request from a client in Denver. I spent two full days just trying to figure out what was what in the file. Compared to my last job where we had a solid layering standard from day one, the difference was night and day. The old standard let me make changes in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had to clean up a set that had no standards from the start?

Did this exact thing happen to a buddy of mine at an engineering firm? He spent a whole weekend tracking down a single pipe run because the previous guy named his layers 'Layer 1' and 'stuff'. He said the worst part was finding a hidden block that wasn't even referenced anywhere, just floating in model space. By the time he set up a new standard template, he swore he'd never buy a beer for the old drafter again.

I don't know man, seems a little dramatic to swear off buying someone a beer over some messy CAD files... yeah it's annoying but it's not like the guy did it on purpose. Most old drafters just did what worked at the time and moved on, they weren't trying to ruin anyone's weekend. Half the time those "hidden blocks" are just leftover junk from exploding something or importing a PDF, not some malicious scheme to waste your time. And honestly, a locked down template is great until you need to do something weird and can't because some manager decided purging unused layers is a security risk.
