Ha! Man, I feel your pain. I spent two years doing the same thing with line weights.

That thing about your mentor potentially trolling you is funny but it also points to something bigger. I notice this a lot in life where people just copy what they were first taught and never question it. Like how my dad always insisted on warming up the car for five minutes in the winter because that's what his dad did, even though modern cars don't need that. Or how some offices still use filing systems from the 1980s because nobody stopped to wonder if there was a better way. We get stuck in these ruts because the first person who shows us something becomes the authority in our head. It takes a certain kind of humility to go back and admit the foundation might have been wrong.

Read this thing once about how most people learn the wrong way to do something from their first teacher and then spend years thinking that's the only way. It's called "first instruction bias" or something like that. My buddy who teaches welding says he spends half his time undoing bad habits students picked up from their high school shop teachers who were just passing along old tricks. Really makes you wonder how much of what we think is "the right way" is just the first way we saw.

Bet your mentor was just trolling you the whole time.
