Question about the sediment load difference after switching from a 6-inch to an 8-inch cutterhead
Honestly, our yardage per hour went up by almost 40% on the same stretch of the James River after we swapped the heads last fall, and I'm trying to figure out if that's typical or if we just got lucky with the soil conditions.

Wait, a 40% jump in yardage just from the cutterhead swap? That's wild! You must have hit the absolute perfect soil type for that bigger head to bite into. Most reports I've seen top out around a 25-30% gain on a good day. Getting that much extra production is like finding free money on the river bottom.

My buddy saw a similar jump with his gear upgrade.

Sounds like he got lucky with the dirt. Not everyone sees that.

Sure, let's pump the brakes on the "miracle upgrade" narrative. A 40% jump sounds impressive on paper, but dirt is dirt, and most guys I've talked to have actually seen their cutterhead upgrades wreck their fuel economy because the bigger head just drags more. Evan's right that 25-30% is the more realistic sweet spot, and anything beyond that usually means you're running the machine way too hard to pull it off. Plus, that bigger head might tear up the soil structure in certain spots, causing more downtime for repairs than the extra yardage is worth. It's not free money if you're paying for it in wear and tear later on.
