The 2 inch rule from an old manual surprised me more than any factory training

I dug out a 1987 operator handbook my uncle left in his shed near St. Louis, and it said you should never run your cutterhead deeper than 2 inches past the ladder's last tooth unless you want to fight swing gear wear. Every class I took told me to chase depth, but the math in that old manual showed how much torque gets wasted. I tested it on a muddy channel job outside Memphis last month, and my pump ran smoother and I pulled way less rock. Has anyone else found weird numbers in older manuals that beat what the new guys push? What's your biggest one?

Old manuals are a goldmine for stuff like this. I used to be all in on chasing maximum depth because that's what the trainers kept hammering in, but that 2 inch rule makes too much sense once you run the numbers on torque and swing gear stress. My crew runs a similar setup and we always had more rock pull on the back side, so when I read your test results I actually pulled out the same manual concept and tried it on a drainage job last week. The difference was noticeable, the machine sounded less strained and we didn't have to baby the pressure nearly as much. New methods aren't always better, sometimes the old guys just knew the physics better because they didn't have fancy computers to hide the real cost. Now I'm second guessing every "best practice" that doesn't have a worn part to show for it.

Old timers swear by the 2 inch rule because it makes the machine feel easier, but feeling easier isn't the same as working smarter. @walker.julia, you're measuring strain on the swing gear, but you're not counting the extra passes you need to make when you bite off less material each time. Cutting shallower means more cycles, more hours on the engine, more fuel burned, and more wear on the tracks from repositioning. That drainage job might have sounded quieter, but I'd bet the clock on it too. The manuals from back then didn't have to pay for diesel at today's prices or deal with production quotas. Every worn part you save on the swing gear just shows up somewhere else, usually on the bottom line.
