The $3,200 sonar upgrade that paid for itself in one month

I dropped $3,200 on a new side-scan sonar setup for the dredge barge back in March. My old unit was from 2011 and I kept misjudging sandbar depth, hit a submerged log pile near the mouth of the Columbia and bent my cutterhead shaft. That repair ran $4,700. The new setup maps the bottom in real time, so I found a buried cable I would have sliced through last week. Saved the client a lawsuit and myself a demo day. Anyone else running side-scan or still trusting the old fathometer?

Hold on, before you call it a win, count the hours you spent fiddling with that thing instead of just reading the water like we used to. My old fathometer never needed a software update, and it never made me second guess a clean reading.

I mean, I get the nostalgia for the old gear, but I honestly don't miss squinting at a screen that lies to me half the time. Yeah, sure, I spent an afternoon learning the menus on my new unit, but that's one afternoon versus every single trip where I used to have to guess if that blip was a rock or a log. And tell me the last time your fathometer showed you the actual shape of a wreck so you could avoid it before you got close, mine just gave a depth and a maybe. Plus, I can pull up last week's scan and see how the bottom shifted after that storm, which is something you just can't do with a single ping. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather trust a picture than a gut feeling when I'm running shallow.

And the real payoff nobody talks about is the liability trail it leaves. When you hit something with old gear, it's your word against the river, but side scan gives you a dated log that shuts down insurance fights before they start. That alone is worth more than the repair bill you dodged.
