Heard a Forman say 'stop feathering your mud so thin' and it clicked
I was watching a guy fix a terrible tape job on a ceiling and he said the key is to leave just enough mud to cover the tape without sanding through. Has anyone else caught themselves overworking the mud trying to get it perfectly flat?

leave just enough mud to cover the tape without sanding through" lmao that's wild to think about actually. I've definitely been that person who keeps adding thin coats trying to get it mirror flat and end up making a mess. It's crazy how the pros just know when to stop and let the texture do the work lol.

Honestly, the "mirror flat" thing is such a trap. I remember my first drywall job I spent like 2 hours on one seam because I kept thinking "just one more thin coat will smooth it out" and ended up with this thick lumpy mess that I had to sand forever. Now I just do two coats and call it good, the texture hides way more than you think and nobody's gonna be running their hand across the ceiling anyway.
