Mud dried too fast on a hot job in Phoenix last summer

I was working on a new build in Phoenix back in July and the heat was brutal. My mud started skimming over before I could even get it smoothed out, left a mess of ridges everywhere. Had to sand it all down the next day and mix in some extra water to slow it down. Anyone else deal with fast drying mud and have a trick that works better?

Mix in a retarder instead of just extra water. That'll buy you more working time without making the mud soupy. But honestly, Ridges aren't the end of the world if you hit it with a quick sanding the next day.

Ugh, right? I feel your pain on that one. Nothing worse than mixing up a batch and then watching it turn into a sad puddle because you were trying to be too careful. The retarder tip is solid though, I started using it a few months back and it really does make a difference. And yeah, who hasn't had to sand down a ridge or two the next morning? It's honestly just part of the deal sometimes.

Throw a wet sponge over the bucket. Helps keep the moisture in while you work.
