Tried the hot mud trick for inside corners and it saved me an hour
I've been hanging drywall for about 12 years now and always used all-purpose mud for my corner bead work. Last week on a job in Columbus I decided to try hot mud for the first coat on inside corners since I was running behind. Mixed up a small batch of 90 minute stuff and it set fast enough that I could do the second coat right after lunch. Has anyone else switched to hot mud for corners or am I late to the game on this?

I used to be a total all-purpose mud guy for corners too. About five years ago I did a bathroom in Toledo and ran out of time, so I grabbed a bag of the 45-minute stuff as a last resort. I was real skeptical the tape would bubble, but I kept the mud thin like pancake batter and worked fast like Claire said. I bedded the tape in while the hot mud was still wet and it actually laid down flatter than my usual method. Now I mix up small batches and do the first coat before lunch, the second after, and I'm done with corner work way earlier than I ever was with all-purpose.

Bed the tape in wet hot mud, but work fast and keep your mud thin (like pancake batter).

I am curious about how you handled the tape with the hot mud. Did you bed the tape into the hot mud while it was still wet, or did you let the hot mud set first and then tape over it with something else? I have tried hot mud for corners a few times but I always worry the tape will bubble or lift if the mud sets too fast. Also, what brand of hot mud did you use for that first coat? I have had different results with the various brands out there.
