My PS2 finally gave up the ghost while I was in the middle of a Resident Evil 4 run
Last Saturday I was playing through the castle section on my old fat PS2 (model SCPH-30001) and the disc drive just stopped reading. It made this horrible grinding noise and then nothing. I ended up having to buy a used slim model off Facebook Marketplace for $30, and thankfully my save file transferred over via memory card. Has anyone else had a console die mid-game like that?

That grinding noise is the laser sled binding up. If you're handy with a screwdriver you can pop the top off that fat model and lubricate the rails with some lithium grease, might buy you another year or two. Saved my brother's launch day PS2 the same way back when.

Yeah and don't forget to clean the lens while you're in there.
