PS2 disc drive just ate my copy of Silent Hill 2

Was trying to play Silent Hill 2 on my fat PS2 last night and the disc drive started making this grinding noise. Then it just stopped spinning entirely. Turns out the laser assembly got stuck halfway. I had to take the whole top shell off and manually slide it back into place with a toothpick. Took about 20 minutes of fiddling. Anyone else had their fat PS2 laser get stuck like that?

Gotta jump in here because the SAME thing happened to my fat PS2 a few months back. Honestly I was trying to play Gran Turismo 4 and the laser just gave up halfway through a race. Took me like half an hour with a chopstick and some patience. Ngl I felt like a surgeon operating on a console. Swear those fat models are built like tanks but the laser assembly is the weak spot.

Man same thing happened to me with my fat PS2 and Gran Turismo 4 too. I ended up having to adjust the little potentiometer screw on the laser ribbon cable to get it reading discs again. @nina_taylor you might want to try that if you still have yours laying around. It's pretty easy once you find the right spot. Just gotta be real careful not to turn it too much or you'll mess it up more.

Honestly feels like these consoles need more maintenance than my first car did.
