PSA: My old PS2 disc drive ate my copy of Vice City and I almost lost it

I was at my buddy's basement last month in Cleveland. Had my old fat PS2 that I dug out from storage. Popped in my Vice City disc and it started making this grinding noise. I ignored it for like 15 seconds. Then the disc came out with a huge circular scratch right through the middle. Game won't load past the title screen now. I took the console apart and found the laser ribbon cable was loose and rubbing against the disc. Taped it down with some electrical tape and it stopped. But my disc is toast. Anyone else had a loose ribbon cable ruin a game?

I mean is it really that bad @green.noah? Just flip the disc over and play something else.

Pulled the same thing with my slim model last year. Had a loose ribbon cable that scratched up my copy of Gran Turismo 4, still got a circular mark on it. Electrical tape fix worked for me too. I actually took it a step further and used a small piece of thick paper to push the cable down a bit more. Your disc is toast for sure though, I tried those disc repair places and it barely helped with a deep scratch like that. Better off just buying another copy off eBay for like 10 bucks.

Man electrical tape is basically the universal fix for everything old and broken isn't it though.
