Shoutout to the retro game shop in Portland that sold me a broken PS2

Drove two hours to Retro Game Trader in Portland because they listed a slim PS2 for $40. Got it home and the disc drive doesn't spin at all, the laser just twitches. Anybody have luck fixing these ribbon cable issues without a whole new drive unit?

Did you actually try the upside down trick yourself or are you just going off what people say online? I've seen a few people claim it works but I'm still pretty skeptical about the whole thing, like why would flipping it do anything different than just unplugging it? That being said I had a friend who swore by it and said it cleared his disc read errors every time, so maybe there's something to it lol. I dunno, just seems like one of those old wives tales that somehow stuck around for 20 years because nobody wanted to admit it was just a coincidence.

Ngl my buddy Kevin tried the upside down trick back in high school and he swore up and down it worked. His PS2 was eating discs left and right, kept getting that red screen of death. He flipped it over on its lid, propped it up with some textbooks, and it ran like a dream for like six months. Then one day the disc flew out and cracked against his wall, so take that as you will. Still cracks me up thinking about him explaining it to me with a straight face like it was some ancient Japanese repair technique.
