Overheard a homeowner in Dallas call our work 'magic' and it stuck with me

I was finishing up a panel upgrade last week when the client told his kid, 'Watch, the electrician is going to make the lights work with magic.' It was just a simple joke, but it made me think about how people see our job. They often don't get the code knowledge and planning behind a safe install. It's not magic, it's a skilled trade built on years of learning. How do you guys explain the real work we do to customers who don't know the trade?

My buddy just showed a customer the old, cracked wires he replaced to explain his bill.

Not gonna lie, I used to think showing them the old parts was kind of a gimmick. Like, just throw the junk away and move on, right? But then I had this job where I replaced some totally charred outlets and the customer kept questioning why it cost so much. So I grabbed the burnt one from the trash and handed it to them. They went quiet, looked at it, and then just nodded and paid without another word. It finally clicked for me that seeing is believing for people.

Helps them see the value instead of just the price.

Honestly, that's a solid way to make the work real for them. I once pulled out a melted breaker to show why their lights kept going out, and the guy's whole attitude changed. It clicks when they see the actual problem you fixed.
