A customer in Denver said my solder joints looked like 'cold oatmeal' and it stung
I was fixing a vintage radio and thought my joints were fine, but the guy pointed out the dull, grainy finish on three of them. I switched to a hotter iron tip and started using more flux paste, which made a huge difference. Do you think visual inspection is as important as electrical testing for judging a good joint?

Yeah looks matter a lot. A good joint usually looks shiny.

Actually, a shiny joint is a good sign but not a guarantee. You can have a shiny joint that's still a cold solder joint if the parts weren't hot enough. The visual check is a fast first step, but you still need to test for a solid electrical connection.

Honestly, that "cold oatmeal" comment is brutal but super helpful. The dull look usually means the solder didn't flow right, so your fix with more heat and flux is exactly it. Visual checks catch those flow issues fast, but you still gotta test with a meter to be sure it's sound.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I mean I've had plenty of solder joints that looked like garbage but worked just fine for years. A little dullness or roughness doesn't always mean the connection is bad. And I've also had shiny perfect looking joints that broke after a few months because I didn't clean the flux off properly. You can get obsessed with making everything look pretty but if the meter says it's good then it's probably fine. Sometimes people overthink this stuff.
