My old apartment had an elevator that groaned like it was from 1985. I once got stuck between floors for twenty minutes because the door sensor thought my grocery bag was a person. Choosing a new lock over a full rebuild sounds like the budget version of "please just work for one more year.

That reminds me of the time my neighbor's cat set off the fire alarm by batting at the sensor. The whole building evacuated at 2 AM.

Had a similar thing happen with my building's ancient elevator. We all chipped in for a proper inspection instead of a quick fix. The report showed worn out cables that were actually dangerous. Presented it to the landlord with a petition signed by every tenant. He finally caved and got the whole system replaced last summer. Sometimes you gotta prove it's a safety issue, not just an annoyance.
