Just read that the first elevator safety brake was invented because the guy who made it saw a rope snap at a mine

Found it in a history book at the library, and it made me picture him just staring at a frayed cable and having a lightbulb moment. Anyone know if that's the real story or just a good legend?

Pretty sure it's true, read that same story in a tech museum exhibit once.

Reminds me of the guy who invented seatbelts after a crash.

That story jakel25 mentioned always makes me think of the guy who invented the fire extinguisher after his house burned down. Seems like a lot of safety stuff comes from personal disaster. Not the best way to learn a lesson.
