Pro tip: A client in her 60s told me she stopped using toner for 20 years because one esthetician told her it was 'just scented water'.

She said her skin felt consistently tight and dry until a new derm suggested a simple hydrating toner, which made me realize how much a single piece of outdated advice can stick with someone for decades, so what's one piece of old-school skincare advice you've had to gently correct for a client?

Ugh, the soap and water thing drives me nuts. My dad is like that, and his skin looks like leather. But honestly, @felixlane has a point about sunscreen being the bigger fight. At least soap cleans you, even if it's harsh. The "only at the beach" sunscreen idea actually causes real harm. Convincing someone they need daily protection to prevent skin cancer is way harder than switching their cleanser. That old advice can literally cost people their health.

How about the old "soap and water is all you need" line? I've met so many people, especially older guys, whose skin is raw and stripped because they're still using harsh bar soap on their face every day. It's tough to convince them that a gentle cleanser won't leave a film, and that their tight, squeaky-clean feeling is actually damaging. That kind of advice really does a number on someone's skin over time.

Remember how sunscreen used to be just for the beach.
