I paid $25 for a reverse image search tool subscription to check a viral photo

It was a picture of a massive sinkhole that supposedly opened in a Kansas cornfield last week. The tool found the same image on a geology blog from 2018, showing a site in Guatemala. That $25 saved me from sharing a complete fabrication. What's your go-to method for verifying old images that pop up as new news?

Saw an article about how these fake disaster photos often use the same few stock images. They'll just change the location tag and add some dramatic text. Makes you wonder how many of those viral pics are actually real.

Yeah, I used to think those tools were kinda overkill but @torres.blair is right about them reusing stock images. Honestly, finding that same photo from years ago with a different location was the wake-up call I needed. Ngl, now I'll pay for verification before I share anything suspicious.
