Vent: I paid $60 for a fact-checking service after a wild story about my local park went viral
Last month, a post claiming the city was secretly selling off land in Miller Park to a developer spread like crazy on Nextdoor. It had fake council meeting minutes and everything. I was worried, so I paid for a subscription to a site that pulls public records. Turns out it was a complete hoax started by someone mad about a new bike lane. The $60 stung, but at least I didn't spread the panic further. Has anyone else had to spend money to verify a local rumor that got out of hand?

That's a rough way to spend sixty bucks. Honestly, you can usually get that kind of public record info for free if you call the city clerk's office directly. They'll email you the real meeting minutes or property records. Those subscription sites are just middlemen. Still, good on you for actually checking before hitting share.

Our county portal is like roberth66 said, three clicks and it's free.

You're mostly right, but calling doesn't always work. My city clerk's office flat out told me to use the portal because they're too short staffed to handle requests. It's a total pain. Those sites are a ripoff, but sometimes they're the only way to get the documents without driving down there in person. The whole system feels broken.

Our county recorder lets you pull up the plat map for free online, just need the parcel number. I agree with @susan81 that calling is best, but sometimes you gotta dig on the official site first. Found mine after clicking through three confusing pages.
