Saw a local news segment get mad about a 'dangerous' new teen slang that I'm 90% sure they made up

That "made up" slang thing used to make me laugh too, but I saw one of those reports actually get a real phrase totally wrong and cause a bunch of confusion. It kind of changed how I see those stories now.

Yeah, it's like they're playing a really bad game of telephone. I saw one of those reports call "bet" a made up word, when people have been saying "you bet" for like a hundred years. It just makes you wonder if the person writing it has ever actually talked to a teenager, you know? You're totally right, @grant.olivia, it takes something that's kind of funny and just makes it annoying because they're not even trying to get it right. Now I just side-eye the whole thing.

Totally get that shift. I used to just roll my eyes at those articles. Then my mom texted me asking if "no cap" was some new app filter. Had to explain it wasn't. Now I just ignore any news piece calling slang "gen z language." They're not even doing the basic work. It just spreads more confusion.
