The whole city council drama over bike lanes was completely manufactured

Saw people losing their minds on Nextdoor about bike lanes supposedly killing small businesses downtown, then found out the council member who started it got $5k from a car dealership PAC. Has anyone else noticed how local controversies always seem to benefit someone with money?

Man, it's always the same story everywhere you look. I swear every small town fight over something dumb leads right back to someone's wallet getting fatter.

Look up who's pushing the loudest about zoning changes or new development. Nine times out of ten they have money tied up in construction or property. Best thing you can do is check your town council meeting minutes online before the meetings happen. That's where the real deals get quietly set up before anyone even votes. Also start asking direct questions at public meetings about who stands to profit. Most people stay quiet so a couple of loud voices in the room can actually change things.

My town spent $80,000 on a traffic study that ended up recommending exactly what the biggest construction firm wanted. I get why people see money behind everything, but sometimes a fight is just a fight. Bike lanes in particular have this weird way of turning into a culture war thing that has nothing to do with who profits. A lot of the people screaming loudest on Nextdoor are just retired folks who hate change and have too much time on their hands. I think the car dealership PAC angle is real, but assuming every local drama is secretly orchestrated by rich people misses how often ordinary people just get worked up over nothing.
