Hot take: I just read that a single polyester shirt can shed over 1,900 microplastic fibers in one wash.

Found that stat in a report from a university study I saw linked on a science blog. Does anyone know if those laundry filter bags actually work to catch them?

Wait, 1,900 from just one shirt? That's a crazy number for a single load. I saw those filter bags too, but the reviews are all over the place. Some people say they catch a lot of fuzz, but others cut them open and still find a ton of the really tiny fibers that slip through.

Yeah, the filter bag reviews are a perfect example of "your mileage may vary" in real life. It's like they catch the big, obvious stuff just to make you feel better, while the real problem slips out with the wash water. Honestly, at this point I'm starting to think my laundry is just slowly turning into a fine, colorful dust that will outlive us all.
