My sister said her $12 Shein haul is 'just like thrifting' and it made me pause.
She argued that buying cheap new clothes to wear once is the same as buying used, but I think it ignores the waste and labor issues, so what's your take on that comparison?

That "just like thrifting" take is a wild way to ignore the whole environmental impact.

Forget thrifting, my last haul was three stained t-shirts and a broken toaster. You're right though, pat_murray53, the shipping and packing waste from all those online returns creates a whole other trash pile. My closet's full, but my recycling bin is overflowing.

So is the comparison just that they're both a gamble on whether you'll get something that fits or looks like the picture? Because last time I thrifted I found a vintage Levi's jacket for $8, and the last time I ordered from Shein I got a shirt that looked like a crumpled napkin after one wash. One of these transactions involves child labor and the other involves a grandmother's dusty closet, but hey, totally the same thing.
