Pro tip: don't trust the 'hand wash only' tag on a $12 Shein dress that says it's silk but isn't

It took me three hours and a ripped seam to realize the fabric was just cheap polyester that melted under lukewarm water, so what's the real deal with those fabric tags anyway?

Oh man, @logan_wood is totally right about the burn test, that's the only way to know for sure. I've learned to just assume any fast fashion tag is a lie lol. Saves so much heartache with the laundry.

Yeah, those tags feel more like a suggestion than actual care instructions sometimes.

What about the thread color? Dyes can mess with fabric feel too.

Honestly I used to just follow those tags without question. Figured they knew the material better than I did. But after a "dry clean only" sweater shrank in cold water, I started checking. Now I do a burn test on a hidden thread. Real silk smells like burnt hair, polyester melts into a hard bead. Those tags are just legal cover most of the time.
