I just realized I've been ordering my burgers wrong at the drive-thru for years

Yesterday at the Burger Barn on Maple Street, I asked for 'no pickles' like I always do, but they still gave me pickles. The cashier said, 'You know, if you say 'plain' instead, the kitchen actually sees it as a special request and pays more attention.' I've been getting pickles on my burger about half the time for the last five years. Has anyone else found a magic phrase that actually gets your order right?

Yeah, that "plain" advice is risky. I read a whole thing online where workers said it's a total crapshoot depending on the restaurant's system. @noahgreen is right, you can lose your cheese and ketchup real easy. My move is to say "only ketchup and cheese" if that's all I want, it spells it out. For no pickles, I double down and say it at the order box and again at the window.

Ugh, the struggle is so real. I learned the hard way that "plain" means a sad, dry burger. Wendy's method is the only safe bet, you gotta list what you DO want. I even check the bag before I drive off now. What's your worst fast food mix up story?

That cashier's advice is backwards at most places. "Plain" just means only meat and bun, so you'd lose your cheese and condiments too. I always say "no pickles, please" and make sure they repeat it back.

My buddy swears by ordering at the window instead of the speaker box. He started walking up to the second window after he got the wrong order five times in a row. Says the person taking your money is usually less rushed and actually listens.
