Thinking about the quiet work of hand-fitting border pieces

I used to spend a whole afternoon fitting those tricky border pieces by eye and hand. You'd get into a zone, measuring twice and making small cuts with a saw. These days, template tools and lasers do it in minutes, but it feels less personal. Last week, I did a herringbone pattern and went back to the old way for the edges, and it just felt right.

Herringbone pattern by hand without templates must have taken forever.

Taping down chalk lines as a guide first saved my sanity (and my fingers). It still takes ages, but breaking it into small sections makes the process feel less huge. The key is accepting it'll be a slow, kinda meditative project. You just have to love the process, or at least really love how it looks when it's done.

Yeah, the meditative part is the whole point.
