A bride's mom said my centerpieces looked like 'sad salad bars'

She was right, so I started adding more height and texture with things like curly willow. Anyone else get a piece of feedback that stung but actually helped?

My aunt once called my first cake a 'lopsided science project', and she was totally right.

Why do we have to take every piece of criticism as helpful though? Sometimes people are just being rude and it's okay to be happy with what you made. Not every "sad salad bar" needs to be fixed, maybe it was your style and that's fine. I feel like we change our stuff too much to please other people's tastes.

Yeah I get what you mean, sometimes the "sad salad bar" is the whole point. I liked what @the_holly said too though, sometimes that outside look can help.

Filter out the people who actually know what they're talking about from the ones just running their mouths. I've got a rule of thumb: if they can't point to one specific thing that's off, their criticism is probably useless. A "the colors are weird" is way different from "the green patch on the left makes the whole thing feel unbalanced." If someone says your sad salad bar is sad, ask them what part makes it sad. If they can't answer, ignore them.
