DAE realize they were storing peonies wrong?

I kept them in the cooler with my other blooms for years, but a wedding client in Tampa last month said hers lasted a week. Turns out she kept them at room temp, and now mine do too. What other common storage rules have you all found are actually wrong?

The room temp trick only works if your place stays around 65-70 degrees and the stems are actually fully hydrated first. A lot of florists skip the deep conditioning step where you let them drink in warm water for a few hours before arranging. That's probably why some people get a week and others see wilting in two days. Your cooler isn't wrong, it just masks the real issue if the flowers were thirsty to begin with. And the fridge dryness thing is real, but a plastic bag or damp paper towel around the stems keeps humidity up without sacrificing the cold.

Hold up, I gotta disagree on the room temp thing. My cooler keeps them from popping open too fast, especially in the summer heat. A week at room temp sounds like a fluke or maybe she got some super fresh stock. I've seen them wilt in two days out of the fridge. The old rule exists for a reason, you know? Cold slows everything down.

Whoa, @emmamason, you're making some solid points. I actually read something about this a while back. It said the fridge can dry them out because it's so dry in there, and the cold can make the texture kinda mealy. Room temp lets them finish ripening with better flavor. But you're totally right about the heat being a problem. If your kitchen gets super warm, then yeah, the fridge makes sense to stop them from going bad too fast. Maybe it just depends on how hot your house gets.

Actually, the fridge is too dry for them.
