Remember when we used to get all our flowers from the local market?

Last week, I ordered a box of ranunculus from a farm in Ecuador that arrived on my phone. Last month, I had to explain to a new hire what a wholesale flower market even was. Three years ago, my Thursday mornings started at 4 AM at the old city market, picking stems by hand in the cold. Now I just refresh a tracking page. Does anyone else miss the smell and the noise of the old way?

My buddy who runs a small cafe used to get his flowers from the market. He said the best part was the old guy who'd always slip an extra bunch of mint into his bag for free. He tried telling that story to his new delivery app rep and just got a coupon code.

Everything's getting turned into a transaction now. The personal touch gets lost when you're just a data point in an app. We're swapping stories for coupon codes.

Man, I used to roll my eyes at people who talked like this. Figured apps just made things easier for everyone. But that story about the cafe guy and the mint hits different. It's not about the free stuff, it's about the guy remembering your order and throwing in something because he knows you. A coupon code can't replace that look he gives you when he hands over the bag. We're losing the small talk that actually connects us.
